An Interview with Katie Evans, Co-Owner, Ocean State Pepper Co.
Ocean State Pepper Co. is on a mission to overhaul the outdated spice rack by controlling the process from seed to bottle. Their product line includes a variety of spices, rubs and pour & go packs using fresh organically-grown chilies, which are dried and blended in-house, to elevate the flavors of our seasoning blends, without the overpowering use of salt.
What 3 words best describe you?
Hard worker, impatient (that's the redhead in me), risk taker
What gets you out of bed in the AM? My clients get me out of bed. And also coffee. Let’s be serious, coffee helps a ton. I actually have another small business teaching pilates full time so I’m up at 5am and quickly out the door to teach at 6am.
Bring Yourself Self-care Ritual: Being outside with my dogs helps restore peace and balance. Usually walking them, getting exercise and fresh air.
Key Negotiation Insight: "Negotiating doesn’t always mean getting exactly what you want or need. Flexibility and listening is more important than talking. I could use a lot more practice in negotiating, that’s for sure!"
How do you stay motivated when faced with challenges and uncertainty?That’s exactly what motivates me. How do I tackle this challenge? How can I fix this problem? Creatively thinking during challenging times motivates me.
Do you have any mentors or what is your strongest source of inspiration? My father is the best mentor I have ever had. He makes me a better person every day. I work hard because of him, and I also play hard because of him. I watched him work so hard his whole life to provide for my family and he didn’t always love his jobs. I wanted to work hard like him but wanted to enjoy my job, so I made a promise to myself at a young age to do something I loved no matter what.
What is your biggest learning from the pandemic?
Always be prepared. For the good, the bad and the ugly. No other way to put it.
What is one tip you wish you could go back and share with your younger self?
Go for it. Do it all! If you have an idea don’t be scared to go for it. I waited too long to venture out on my own when I actually could have done it 10 years ago.
